Preventative Care

Teeth Cleaning & Preventative Care at Westlake Dental Care

At Westlake Dental Care, we believe prevention is the key to a lifetime of healthy smiles. Our hygiene team is committed to educating patients on the “why” behind brushing, flossing, and routine cleanings—not just the “how.” Understanding your oral health empowers you to protect your teeth and gums from plaque, decay, and disease.

Our Preventive Hygiene Program Includes:

  • Complimentary toothbrush and floss at every hygiene visit

  • A personalized cleaning schedule based on your unique dental needs

  • One-on-one instruction in proper brushing and flossing techniques to optimize your at-home care

Recommended Tools for At-Home Oral Health

We strongly recommend investing in a high-quality electric toothbrush, such as the Sonicare or Oral-B SmartSeries 5000. These are clinically proven to clean better than manual brushes and far outperform low-cost battery-operated “spin brushes.” If an electric brush isn’t available, our provided manual brushes are still effective when used properly.

We also offer dental sealants, a protective treatment that guards the grooves of your molars from decay—great for kids and adults alike.

Your Mouth Is Connected to Your Whole Body

Oral health isn’t just about your teeth. Research has linked gum disease and dental infections to serious health conditions, including:

  • Heart disease

  • Stroke

  • Diabetes

  • Low birth weight in babies

  • Erectile dysfunction

At Westlake Dental Care, we take a full-body approach to your oral wellness. Our goal is not just to treat problems—but to prevent them before they start.

TMJ & Sleep Apnea Screening

Dr. Akriti is extensively trained in identifying and managing TMJ disorders and sleep apnea. If you experience frequent jaw pain, facial tension, or disrupted sleep, we’ll assess your jaw joint function and screen for signs of airway obstruction. Some patients may benefit from diagnostic X-rays to evaluate their bite or jaw structure.

Oral Cancer Screenings at Every Visit

Oral cancer can be life-threatening if not caught early. That’s why we perform a comprehensive oral cancer screening during every routine appointment. Dr. Akriti examines your lips, tongue, cheeks, neck, and throat for any early signs of abnormal changes.

You may be at greater risk for oral cancer if you:

  • Smoke or use tobacco

  • Consume a diet low in fruits and vegetables

  • Have been diagnosed with HPV

  • Have prolonged sun exposure (lip cancer)

Watch for symptoms that last longer than two weeks, such as:

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

  • Red or white patches in the mouth

  • Tongue numbness or mouth pain

  • Jaw swelling or stiffness

If you notice any of these signs, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation promptly.
