Denture Care at Westlake Dental Care

Keep Your Smile Comfortable, Clean, and Long-Lasting

At Westlake Dental Care, we want your dentures to function as beautifully as your natural teeth once did. While today’s dentures are more durable and lifelike than ever, they still require proper daily care to maintain their fit, function, and appearance. Taking a few simple steps each day can help extend the life of your dentures and protect your oral health.

While only a qualified dental professional can diagnose oral conditions or adjust your dentures safely, here are essential tips to help you keep them in excellent condition between visits.

Daily Cleaning Tips for Dentures

Proper cleaning is key to preventing stains, odors, and plaque buildup on your dentures. Here's how to care for them safely:

  • Brush Your Dentures Daily: Use a soft, large nylon denture brush with round-ended bristles to clean both the inside and outside surfaces.

  • Avoid Toothpaste: Regular toothpaste can be too abrasive and may scratch or damage your dentures. Instead, use a non-abrasive denture cleanser or cream recommended by your dentist.

  • Rinse After Eating: Remove and rinse your dentures after meals to wash away food debris and minimize plaque buildup.

  • Use Cold Water Only: Hot water can warp your dentures and affect their fit. Always use cold or lukewarm water during rinsing or soaking.

Handle With Care

Dentures may be durable, but they are not indestructible. Follow these precautions to avoid accidental damage:

  • Hold them over a folded towel or basin of water when cleaning, in case they slip out of your hands.

  • Inspect regularly for signs of wear, staining, or cracks. Worn or damaged dentures may lose their proper function and need repair or replacement.

Watch for Loose Dentures

If your dentures begin to feel loose or uncomfortable, do not try to adjust them yourself. Loose dentures can cause:

  • Gum irritation or sores

  • Increased pressure on bone and soft tissue

  • Problems with chewing and speaking

Always contact your dentist promptly if you notice changes in fit or comfort. Regular dental checkups will help monitor bone changes and ensure that your dentures continue to fit properly.

Don’t Let Them Dry Out

When not wearing your dentures, they should be stored in a container filled with water or a denture cleaning solution to prevent them from drying out or losing their shape. Never use hot water, and avoid leaving them exposed to air for extended periods.

Oral Health and Medication Awareness

Your oral health doesn’t stop with your dentures. Certain medications can cause dry mouth, which can increase your risk for fungal infections or sore spots. Be sure to inform both your physician and dental team about any medications you're taking so they can help manage side effects and support your oral wellness.

Insurance Tip

Most dental insurance policies allow for denture replacement or upgrades every five years. If it’s been a while since your last fitting or you're noticing changes in your denture’s performance, it may be time to schedule a consultation.

When to See Your Dentist

Even with dentures, it’s important to maintain regular dental visits. We recommend that all denture-wearers:

  • Schedule a check-up at least once a year

  • Let us know immediately if you notice discomfort, poor fit, or difficulty eating

  • Report any changes in your gum tissue, tongue, or jaw function

Ready for a Refresh?

If your dentures are more than five years old, causing discomfort, or simply don’t look or feel right anymore, our team can help assess whether a reline, repair, or full replacement is the right next step for you.
