ARESTIN®

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a common but serious gum infection that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. It develops when harmful bacteria accumulate in the deep pockets between the teeth and gums—areas that regular brushing and flossing can’t fully reach.

Causes and Consequences

  • Bacterial Infection: The main cause of periodontal disease is plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. When plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional.

  • Gum Inflammation: Bacteria in plaque release toxins that irritate the gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding. Over time, this inflammation can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating deeper pockets that harbor even more bacteria.

  • Tooth Loss: As the infection progresses, it destroys the gum tissue and bone that support your teeth. Without treatment, this can lead to tooth mobility or complete tooth loss.

Introducing ARESTIN®

ARESTIN® is a locally applied antibiotic used as part of a comprehensive periodontal treatment plan. It is placed directly into the infected gum pockets following a scaling and root planing procedure—the deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line.

  • Active Ingredient: ARESTIN® contains minocycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic that targets the bacteria responsible for gum disease.

  • How It Works: The antibiotic is delivered in powder form directly into the periodontal pockets. It adheres to the tissue and begins releasing the medication immediately, continuing to fight infection for up to 30 days.

Benefits of ARESTIN®

  • Targeted Application: ARESTIN® delivers the antibiotic exactly where it's needed—into the infected gum pockets.

  • Extended Release: The slow, sustained release provides ongoing treatment between visits, helping maintain therapeutic levels of the antibiotic.

  • Reduced Inflammation: Clinical studies show that using ARESTIN® alongside scaling and root planing results in reduced gum inflammation and better healing outcomes.

  • Improved Results: Patients treated with ARESTIN® have shown significantly better improvement than with scaling and root planing alone—often lasting up to 90 days.
