Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide Sedation at Westlake Dental Care

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas used in dentistry to help patients feel calm and at ease. It has been a trusted method of sedation for decades, known for both its safety and effectiveness. During administration, patients receive a carefully controlled mixture of 30%–50% nitrous oxide with 50%–70% oxygen.

Safe and Gentle Sedation

Nitrous oxide allows patients to remain awake, responsive, and in full control of their bodily functions. Some may experience a sense of calm or mild amnesia and may even drift into light sleep during treatment, often with little memory of the procedure afterward.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

  • Adjustable levels of sedation for maximum comfort

  • Fast-acting — begins working within minutes

  • No lingering side effects or “hangover” feeling

  • Safe for the heart and lungs when properly administered

  • Reduces anxiety and gag reflex for a smoother dental experience

When to Avoid Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide may not be recommended for patients with certain medical conditions, including:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Emphysema

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Upper respiratory infections or congestion

  • Unusual chest or breathing complications

If you’re unsure whether nitrous oxide is right for you, we recommend a brief trial session to help you decide.
